Future of Aquaculture

- General Introduction –
Good Management Practices for Responsible Aquaculture at the Production Level

Aquaculture production is increasing in importance as a reliable supply of quality seafood products since marine fisheries decline.
However, it is critical that a long-term view
is taken to ensure that the investment in aquaculture development is ecologically, economically and socially sustainable in the local and regional environmental context.
Aquaculture has and will continue to play an increasingly important role in generating employment and revenue for many appropriate regions in the world.
A sustainable Aquaculture industry could translate into significant economic benefits as it is estimated that aquaculture employs an average of 1 full time person per 2 hectare of ponds
(plus part time labour at harvest time) and employment benefits in the region.

Project purpose:
The purpose of the int
eractive training tool is to assist countries and territories in the Asian (Latin America, Africa) region in improving rural livelihoods and food security through development and implementation of responsible aquaculture and management practices and to assist countries, territories and governments in Asia in the implementation of relevant measures contained in FAO's Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and other relevant international agreements at the same time. Through an interactive training software, Guidelines and training modules on aquaculture related provisions of the Code of Conduct with focus on larval rearing and production of fingerlings will be developed and disseminated in a cost-effective manner and will be used in training courses in developing countries.

"Sustainable aquaculture activities need expertise and experience, from the biological as well as from the economical point of view"
